Quilt 66 - 4 Patch, Ricky Style

2001 or 2002, 70" X 80"
This was another workshop taught by Ricky Tims for West Sound Quilters. I can't remember what year it was but I do remember that I didn't make as many squares with the small 4 patches in them because I knew if I didn't finish the top at the workshop it wouldn't get finished for many years. The cross hatch in the black squares is quilted with variegated thread that was on sale and I still have several cones of it. It is a great color but 10 cones even on sale probably wasn't a necessary purchase. When the quilt hung at the guild quilt show it did receive a ribbon. It has flannel on the back, it's mine, and we like to use it.

Quilt 65 - Ione's Birthday Five by 5

2000, 60 x 70
In spring of 2000, we were making lots of Five by 5 quilts. Adele was visiting Gladys and they called to ask if I could put a quilt quickly in the queue so they could have it back for an event they needed it for. I said sure, so they sent it off to me. I quickly quilted it and sent it back. At my 50th birthday celebration at Diamond Lake,OR, everyone was smiling when I opened the box. There was the quilt I had quickly quilted for them. It was my gift. What a fun gift from my brothers and sisters. Thanks.

Quilt 64 - Moon and Stars

2000, 20" x 30
In 1998, my cousin, Marlys, was commissioned to make a quilt for an artist. She brought the quilt to me for quilting and stood beside me as we figured out what the quilting should be. Little did I know, she was making me a small version of that quilt and gave it to me two years later for my 50th birthday.

p.s. I quilted the small quilt, too. Good thing I was able to practice on the large one so I knew what to quilt on mine!

Quilt 63 - Mom's Flowers of the Month

2005 (?), 25 x 25
In honor of Ione's birthday (Happy Birthday, Mom!), I am posting this wall hanging I made for her. Once upon a time, Ione was a Tri-Chem dealer. I was going through her closet and came across a pack of samples she had painted that had the Flowers of the Month on them. I just had to put them into a quilt. I asked her if I could have them and made this quilt for her as a surprise. (Not surprising, however, is that I gave her the top and had her do the quilting!)

Quilt 62 - Folded Bow Tie

FOLDED BOW TIE 24" X24", 1999 This is another class sample. The simple bow tie block but with the folded center block. Set the blocks on point and then I could also teach side setting triangles with no bias edges. Somewhere is a picture of this quilt done with reproduction fabrics. Maybe you will get to see it sometime.

Quilt 61 - Lattice and Flowers

2004, 60' x 90'
I made good use of Aunt Adele's new sewing room when she moved to Washington. This was a quilt I found in one of her quilt books. (Sorry the picture is a little crooked!) The lattice-work was white in the pattern and the background was purple, I think. I don't usually make quilts that require templates or that can't be strip-pieced, so this really tried my patience!
The interior tan squares were an answer to running out of the flowered border fabric. The black fabric is actually a tone on tone with some grey in it, so it isn't quite at stark looking in person.

Quilt 60 - Flannel Cabin Quilt

2000, 80 x 90
These fabrics were a Christmas gift from Cindy. It was a flannel panel with fat quarters of the companion fabrics. I was working on this at a retreat at Pacific Beach. There were half square triangle blocks around the center panel forming large diamonds. It was on the design wall when several blocks fell off onto the floor. When I put them back up I had turned a few of them and like how it looked with those last blocks at a different angle. Changed the whole look of the quilt. I love how this turned out.

Quilt 59 - Blue Jewel Box

1993, 90" X 106"
In a 1991 Lady's Circle Patchwork Quilts Magazine there was a picture of a Jewel Box Quilt and it caught my eye. I had the magazine open to that page, kept seeing it and saying that someday I would make this quilt. In 1993 I finally made this quilt for a class sample that wasn't shown till well into the evening of a Mystery Quilt Night Class. Many of the 18 students became wonderful friends and it was a very special night.

After seeing the colored picture in the magazine I realized the pattern was in the American School of Needlework Templates for the 171 Four-Patch Quilt Blocks book.(c)1988 These pieces, turned different ways, make many other very traditional blocks.

As you will see, this is a favorite pattern of mine. I don't know how many of these quilts I have made but as we come up with pictures to post we just might get a count. So far we have posted Jewel Box Quilts at #1 and #20. I'm thinking we might have at least 20 when we find all the pictures. When I finish projects, I have a scrap box I use for pieces that fit this pattern. It's nice to grab the box when I want to make another jewel box quilt. Sometimes I just need to cut the background, as the scraps are already cut and in the box.

Quilt 58 - Basket Table Runner

2001, 18" x 54"
We post this Spring Basket Table Runner today hoping that winter may soon be over and the temperature will get above 60 degrees F. This was a class sample made from by-the-pound fabrics.

Quilt 57 - Patriotic Five by Five

2000, 20" x 20"
A class sample for a Five by Five class. This pattern is simple and easy and like the one we posted earlier is a great way to showcase fabric. Different size strips make different size quilts. After going to the USS Bryce Canyon and USS Simon Lake Reunions, I decided this would be a great quilt to use for our name tags until we go to another one. (I have another wall hanging that holds my quilt guild name tags and pins.)

This quilt hangs at Jackson Park Chapel, Bremerton, WA.

We post this quilt today because I spent the day in Battleground, WA with our dear friends Judie and Standley. FREEDOM ISN'T FREE. On May 31, 2008 her grandson, Andrew Jon Shields, his family and friends paid the ultimate price for freedom. While serving with the 173rd Special Troop Battalion (Airborne) in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, Andrew was killed in action. We post this quilt today in his memory.

Quilt 55 - Fat Quarter Five by Five

1998, 30" x 30"
Mom had a group of quilting friends that got together once a year and did a fat quarter exchange. Some collections, like the fabrics in this quilt, were quite eclectic, but Mom wanted to keep them all together as a memento of that year's reunion. She decided on the Five by Five pattern to really let the fabrics shine.

Quilt 54 - Pansy Quilt

12" x 18"
This quilt was one of several small pansy quilts that Gladys sent me to quilt for her. When I was finished quilting it I added the note saying that I liked this one and asking what the binding would be. Several weeks later I found out "what the binding would be." It came back to me as a birthday present. I'm not sure what this pattern is called but it sure does look great with the pansy fabric.

Quilt 53 - Fishing Captain

1990's, 18" x 24"
When my husband Doug got his bass boat for his birthday in the late 1990's, Adele made him a quilt showing him with his fishing pole and a fish. Doug's fishing buddy, Mike, got his quilted counterpart a Captain's pin to wear on his shirt.

Quilt 52 - Flying Geese Class Sample

Late 1990's, 12 x 15
This was a class sample for a Flying Geese class Mom taught at Diamond Lake, OR.

The class was teaching 4 different techniques for making Flying Geese. The result was they were all fun to do and different students had different choices for their favorite technique. Fun class and ended up with a cute wall hanging.
